Approaching a Vanishing Point

Brick wall, lower Queen Anne, Seattle

The images I download off my CF cards I organize into iView catalogs for quick review and easy retrieval. I usually tag and label the photos accordingly, but only recently have I realized that apart from concrete (well, digital) organization I always classify an image at first glance into one of three categories:

  1. Happy surprises  (rare)
  2. Meh.  (96-98%)
  3. Disappointments  (rare)

This shot was category one—a shot I didn’t think much of when exposed but was happy to see turned out well. I’d really like to add another category into the fray, but doing so would only be deluding myself:

  1. GREAT SHOT. Knew it all along

I try not to create associations with particular images because it’s so difficult to be absolutely sure I nailed any given shot. I can know that technically I should have pulled the shot off, and that my subject matter was “there,” and that my framing was solid. (The only thing I never question is my vision—what I want the shot to be.) But I try not to get my hopes up, probably because I set my expectations pretty high and I’m a perfectionist.

The shot is far from perfect, but still, happy surprise. Which is good enough for today.

This shot really makes me want to listen to Pink Floyd for some reason. Any shot that is not only great, but also conjures up thoughts of Floyd, gets an A+ in my book.

Excuse my while I go find my bong and spend the evening staring at this photo.

HA. Hilarious. I’ll be sure and give you a full res. copy for your, “experience.” After all, what’s a room without a “the Wall” poster anyway?

Hey Alex, have you ever heard of “camera tossing”?

    Yep. Fun stuff.

But I hope that question wasn’t a thinly veiled critique? I was actually holding the camera steady on this shot. Hehe.
